Mission

The mission of the National Resource Center for Safe Aging is to increase awareness and knowledge about injuries among older Americans by providing reliable and useful information to public health professionals; and also to older adults, caregivers, family members and others who share their concerns.

The primary focus of NRCSA is to create and sustain an online community of public health and senior care professionals whose work involves teaching and promoting safety and safe practices among the elderly. This will be accomplished by building the web site www.SafeAging.org into the premier online resource center utilized by professionals to identify, experience, comment on, and share best practices, including:

  • Community-Based Education Programs
  • Educational Materials / Curricula
  • Safety Checklists
  • Clinical Guidelines
  • Patient and Family Handouts
  • Safety Checklists
  • Distance-Learning Courses
  • Video and Audio Programs
  • Public Service Announcements
  • Discussion and Support Groups

A secondary goal for the NRCSA web site is to provide seniors and their families a convenient, authoritative online source for "safe aging" information and resources, including:

  • Informational Articles, Brochures and Pamphlets
  • Books and Manuals
  • On-line Courses
  • Safety Checklists
  • Community Programs or Classes
  • Videos
  • Helpful Web Sites

The strength of the National Resource Center is its partnership with the American Society on Aging and its foundation in the sciences of both gerontology and injury prevention through the leadership of San Diego State University. NRCSA injury prevention activities are supported by a network of public health professionals through consultation and technical input.

Who is involved:

The National Resource Center staff works closely with public health, injury control and senior services experts to gather and integrate the knowledge and practices of these professional networks. An Advisory Board assists NRCSA with reviewing and recommending additions and deletions to the contents of the resource directory for public health and senior care professionals and the consumer resource library (e.g. database) for seniors and their families.
